Behind the Scenes at Órale Homestead: How Our Small-Batch Candles Come to Life
Share
If you’ve ever wondered what goes into a candle beyond “smells good + looks cute,” you’re in the right place.
At Órale Homestead, every candle we make is hand-poured in small batches by our family in rural Kentucky. It’s not a factory situation over here. It’s a real-life, roll-up-your-sleeves process—from choosing vessels to pouring wax to packing orders with care.
This is a behind-the-scenes look at how our candles come to life (and why that process is exactly what makes them special).
1) It starts with the vibe: choosing the vessel
A lot of our candles begin with the vessel—because for us, the container isn’t just a container. It’s part of the story.
We love working with thrifted mugs and unique finds because they’re one-of-a-kind. When you grab one of our mug candles, there’s a good chance we won’t ever have that exact one again. That’s the fun of it: you’re not buying something mass-produced—you’re adopting a little piece of functional art for your home.
Before anything gets poured, each vessel is inspected, cleaned, and prepped so it’s ready to be safely filled and burned.
2) Scent comes next (and yes, we overthink it)
Choosing scents is honestly one of the best parts—and also the part where we’re the pickiest.
We’re always thinking about questions like:
- What mood does this scent create?
- Does it feel cozy? Clean? Warm? Bright?
- Would you want it in your kitchen? Living room? Bathroom? Bedroom?
- Does it feel like a “gift scent” people will grab for birthdays and holidays?
We test combinations, we adjust, and sometimes we say: “This is good… but it’s not Órale Homestead yet.”
When we find the right scent, it becomes part of what we’re building: candles that feel personal, comforting, and memorable.
3) The pour: small-batch, slow, and intentional
Once vessels and scents are ready, we move into production mode.
We measure, melt, mix, and pour in small batches so we can keep quality consistent and give each candle the attention it deserves. We’re hands-on with everything—making sure wicks are placed correctly, pours are clean, and the finish looks right.
This is also where the family teamwork really shows up. Someone’s prepping vessels, someone’s pouring, someone’s labeling, someone’s doing a “quality check” (and yes, we absolutely have opinions).
4) Curing + finishing touches (the part nobody talks about)
Here’s the unglamorous truth: candles need time.
After pouring, our candles go through a curing period so they burn better and the scent performs the way it’s supposed to. During this stage, we’re also doing finishing touches:
- labeling
- cleaning up edges
- checking for any imperfections
- making sure everything looks gift-ready
It’s the little details that make the difference between “a candle” and “a candle you’re excited to light.”
5) Packing orders like we’re sending a gift (because we kind of are)
When someone orders from us, we never want it to feel like a random box showed up.
We pack each order with the kind of care we’d want if we were opening it: secure packaging, clean presentation, and a final check to make sure what you receive feels thoughtful.
Because you’re not just buying a product—you’re supporting a family business that’s building something real.
Why we do it this way
We could cut corners. We could go faster. We could make everything look the same.
But the whole point of Órale Homestead is that it’s small-batch, family-run, and full of personality. Our candles are meant to feel like they came from real hands and a real home—because they did.
